Well, my father, a dyed in the wool conservative actually said to me that if Bush were an honorable man, he would have resigned after Katrina. He said anybody with any high level management experience saw that as the greatest government failure in this country's history.

His words, not mine. And this is a guy who spent a lifetime studying management capabilities and assessing organizations and institutions on their abilities and was the #2 guy on Wall St in his field (oil and gas) when he retired. Try arguing the Nagin defense with him some time, he'd probably enjoy the laugh.

Lenin: He's not being tested yet by anybody because he's not president yet.

As far as what was said during the campaign: what's disingenuous about a candidate saying his opponent is unqualified for anything, because it is implicitly a relative measure? Obama said "I'm as qualified or more qualified" and Hillary said "he's not qualified, or I'm more so."

He is NOT nominating her for Secondary President. He's nominating her for Sec State, so she doesn't need to be as qualified as he is, does she?

AND

It's ballsy of the press to criticise him when the sitting president has held how many press conferences in the 8 years he effed up the country?

Obama has had more press conferences and he isn't even POTUS yet!

I'd not call that 'incognito'. I give him credit for trying to stay ahead of the further economic mess forthcoming but a lot can happen in 40 days, and year-end is super layoff time even without another big bank or auto-maker failure.

NY is broke, it is because Republican Governor Pataki 1994-2006 along with his Republican Senate.
Drove the state into the ground for the unions.

They even botched the death penalty, and sponsored the 100% assessments.

If you look at NYS. Westchester, NYC and LI. Which are Democrat areas. Have a standard of living that rivals the best places in the world.

Upstate NY, run by Republicans. Looks like a third world country.

Does a mayor or governor outrank a president?

Only when it is a disaster.

FYI: Obama only lost Texas by 10%. The former Democratic state. With a hugh influx of Kartina reffugees living in Texas, will lead Texas into the Democratic fold.

If you don't think so, look at the demographics.

Essentially Obama’s near daily press conferences and Cabinet Member announcements do have an effect on current issues (I.E. the market)... So while he may say that there can only be one president at a time, he is kind of influencing stuff incognito...

I'm happy to have armed US forces within our borders for our own protection. Our armed forces are stretched thin and deployed all over the world; perhaps it's not a bad investment to protect ourselves first.

Interesting comment, Walliman...I can't find a reference for the thread I saw today on MSNBC (your fave, Lenin, but I'm not allowed to change the channel), but it was about the "Two Presidents", Bush & Obama. That's reality for the next month+ until inauguration...a lame-duck and a hands-tied President-elect. I can only hope that there is not another massive business failure in that timeframe, but one of the Big 3 looks good for it.

After repeatedly trying to get thru to Cablevision on the phone, I eventually got ticked off and drove over to their office on Middlebush Rd...

I was told by one of their customer service reps that they weren’t aware of any issues....

Thankfully it appears that my connection is back to normal tonight....

My impression from the brief article was that the new policy applies to anyone and everyone. Groups expressing that they may be singled out due to profiling is nothing new. I don't doubt at all that there are homegrown terrorists in our country; fine with me to take precautions against it.

Poughkeepsie’s 2009 budget to raise taxes four percent

POUGHKEEPSIE – To the average homeowner, property taxes will rise in 2009 by about $26 now that the Poughkeepsie Common Council Monday night adopted a new fiscal plan.

The council whittled roughly one percent from the tax rate originally proposed by the mayor by cutting a number of budgetary items including saving $110,000 but cutting the city’s legal staff from three attorneys to two.

Lawmakers also reduced police overtime slightly, but will keep an eye on the spending, said Council chairman Brian Doyle.

“From an overtime budget of over $1 million we cut $21,000, so that’s not a significant amount, and we also assured the police chief that if during the year he comes to us and says he is going to need more, we’ll make the appropriate budget adjustments that we need to make,” he said.

The Common Council also left four firefighter positions in the budget, but did not fund them, and cut spending in the Council and mayor’s office budgets.

The council did add $17,000 for youth programs, but reduced Public Works overtime and held off on purchasing some new equipment.

Logger dead in Dutchess County accident

PINE PLAINS – Police say a logger, who died while working, late Monday morning, apparently was trapped by a tree he may have been cutting down. Eric Donaldson, 36, was working in the woods, off Route 199 in Pike Plains, when the apparent accident happened.

Police say they received a call requesting help for a logger trapped under a tree and in cardiac arrest. Several attempts were made to revive Donaldson, including use of a police automatic external defibrillator.

It appears that Donaldson, who had worked for J&J Lumber, of Dover Plains, for about five weeks, was trapped by a branch of a tree when the tree rolled after being cut down. A fellow logger cut the tree off the victim and called 911 via his cell phone.

An autopsy will be performed.

Lenin, personally, I do care which fire engine comes to my house if necessary - my preference would be the CLOSEST one available. Same thing for police/sheriffs/troopers. A few minutes can mean a difference between losing your home or worse in that type of situation.

NY is now broke because of alllllllllllllllll of that bleeding heart social programs stuff that wasn't just for actual citizens of the USA, but ANYBODY!

We have a historic opportunity to cut this stuff back and impose rules that limit it to actual citizens.
